The Prince Rupert Port Authority is a local port authority operating the Port in the Prince Rupert Harbour. They are an autonomous and commercially viable agency, governed by a local Board of Directors with full control over all Port decisions, with a mandate to facilitate and expand the movement of cargo and passengers through the Port of Prince Rupert.

The Port Authority is responsible for the overall planning, development, marketing and management of the commercial port facilities within the Prince Rupert Harbour. The Port Authority owns a number of docking facilities, water lots, and islands in both the inner and outer harbour areas of Prince Rupert. Terminals include: Fairview Terminal, a 21.5 hectare break-bulk facility currently undergoing redevelopment into a container terminal; Westview, a timber dock with a berth face of 309m and adjoining property; Ocean Dock, a timber dock with a berth face of 151m; a Cruise Ship Facility, a concrete pontoon able to handle smaller vessels; Atlin Dock, a small cruise ship facility; and Northland Terminal, the new cruise ship dock.

Prince Rupert Container Terminal: The 24 hectare (59 acre) facility is the first dedicated intermodal (ship to rail) container terminal in North America with the design capacity to move 500,000 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units) per year. The 22 meter (72 feet) wharf extension provides a berth depth of 18.7 meters (61.4 feet), enabling the terminal to easily accommodate container ships in excess of 12,500 TEUs. Container ship cargo is offloaded by Maher Terminals three 1,800 tonne super post panamax cranes with a reach of 22 containers. The container yard can hold 9,000 TEUs and has outlets for refrigerated containers. Upon completion of Phase 2 in 2012, the container terminal will have a two million TEU capacity, making it the second largest handling facility on the West Coast.
